You were a big alt-indie musician, making music that tended to have a little bit of everything; the funk and beat of the funk tribe and the techno tribe, the guitar riffs and drum solos from the rock tribe, some classical instruments as undertones, and pop-like lyrics and beats. All the while you also put your own spin on it. Music had always been an outlet for you, always allowed you to take what was in your head and thread it into sound for everyone to hear. Sometimes it was chaotic, sometimes it was mellow, and it always depended on your mood when writing, composing, and singing. It's usually was drew people to your music. It was down to Earth, yet also complex and simple at the same time. Those who wanted to dive into the meaning of your music and dissect it would find multiple layers, many undertones that all harmonized. Those who just wanted to vibe out to your music could do that as well.

ꨄ︎. When you had left your career behind, it wasn't because of anything bad. You left with one final song in which explained that you were stepping down to let the new generation to find their own flow, to let other people take the stage, to be able to sit back and enjoy everything that will come in the future. You were only around 24 when you put down your guitar for the final time for the public; But you never gave up music for good on your own. While you never published anything anymore, you kept writing and composing for yourself as it was truly your passion.

ꨄ︎. This is when JD found you, playing in a friend's cafe. You had caught his attention right away, so much so he didn't hear the waiter when he had asked for JD's order. He was honestly so captivated by you for a moment he wondered if you were some sort of siren. He soon realized, yeah no you weren't, you just were really, really good. And he needed your number, badly. And that sounded a little creepy, but when you see someone who's not only good looking but knows how to sing and play an instrument all in one? You don't miss that chance to talk them up, and JD was defiantly not missing his chance!

ꨄ︎. JD didn't see a ring on your finger, it was fair game for him. Luckily you hadn't been seeing anyone at the time, but you still gave him a reality check after he approached you as though he was the coolest guy on the planet; Introducing himself before using some sort of cheesy pick up line to get your number. "Hey, babe, my name is John Dory and you seem rather lonely. You know, I can fill that 'me' shaped hole in your heart if you give me your number!" And then he winked!? Your friend was flabbergasted. You thought he was really brave.

ꨄ︎. And you hate to admit that his stupid pick-up line (which didn't even seem like a pick-up line!) actually worked and he got your number. (And he would be so smug and proud about this fact for the rest of his life.)

ꨄ︎. You two talked for a few months before making anything official, and then you waited about a year or two before you two even thought about moving in together. Even so, by 6 months of dating you basically lived in Rhonda; Your stuff littered his home, you had your own set of clothes there, your own toothbrush, and even your own house slippers. Then when you moved in, it felt natural. It felt like this was where you were always meant to end up and somehow the planets aligned. And for some reason JD never noticed the fact you brought in an electric guitar, which also sat in your shared closet. Sometimes you wonder if he's just stupid or a little blind, because he's also seen your play.

ꨄ︎. Either way, one day when he was hoisting his brothers over (after the whole Floyd situation got resolved, and god you were kind of glad you were staying with friends during all of that; not because you didn't like his brothers but because you didn't think you could handle meeting his family during that whole situation.) when they heard you playing your guitar in the bedroom. You weren't doing anything fancy, mostly tuning the guitar and making sure the strings didn't need to be replaced. But, of course, that always had to include one of your most iconic guitar riffs from a song about fighting your crushing mentality during the lowest part of your career. "Holy shit dude, I didn't know your lover listened to (Y/N)!" Branch would be the first to comment, being the most diverse music listener in the family. Floyd, who had been distracted by the riff, perked up at the conversation and nodded in agreement. JD only gave them a confused look, leaning against his kitchen counter, "Dude, my lover is (Y/N)?" And JD wasn't sure what to expect, but it wasn't all four of his brothers stopping and staring at him completely baffled. Mostly Floyd and Branch, who soon yelled a rather loud, "WHAT?!" "What?!" Which only confused JD more.

ꨄ︎. You hadn't met JD's family before this point, but you've heard all about them; Not only from JD, when he told you about his band days, and when you heard them around the trailer when they would come over. Usually you stayed in the bedroom, not to be rude yet to just let JD have his time with his brothers. Yet, you couldn't understand what all the yelling was about, "Yo, Que te pasa? Why the hell are you guys yelling?" You would ask, poking your head out of the door to the bedroom. Your expression tired, your hair messier, yet you could care less at this moment; You were sure JD's brothers wouldn't mind, they would see you worse later on since you were planning to stay with that big doofus. "Oh my god-" You flinched when Floyd dropped the cup he was holding, his jaw dropping upon seeing you; And honestly, for a second, you forgot you used to be a big artist. "John Dory," You started, startled by the reactions his brothers were giving, "Vas a decirme lo que esta pasando ahora mismo."

ꨄ︎. JD is always a little intimidated when you speak Spanish, mostly because his Grandma used to scold him and his brothers in Spanish. So he only explained (rather quickly) how his brothers had heard you tuning your guitar in the bedroom and how they just got weird. And that's when Branch defended himself, along with Floyd, how JD never told them that you were his lover! "And what's it to you that I love your brother?" You shot back quick and snappy, crossing your arms as you shot a glare their way. You weren't above throwing hands with JD's brothers. Floyd noticed the way JD glanced away, sipping his coffee. He was quick to stand up, placing a hand on Branch's shoulder to calm him, before explaining the whole situation to you better; Saying how Branch and Floyd were just big fans of your music and they didn't realize that you were with JD, because no matter how much JD spoke about you he never told them that you were his lover.

ꨄ︎. "Oh, Mierda lo siento." God, this made things a little awkward, "I thought you were about to be one of those horrible step-siblings that didn't like his brother's lover for some dumb reason like my hair." "What? No!-" "No, yeah, I see that now. My bad, really sorry." You mumbled, rubbing the back of your neck, "JD can be really, really dense sometimes, shut it John Dory!," You pointed a finger at JD before he could make a peep in protest about your slight insult, but it was made out of full love. "Let's start over, hi I'm (Y/n) and it's really nice to meet you."

ꨄ︎. Safe to say, JD forgot to tell his brothers that he was dating an old sensational artist...and kind of forgot you were one and was very shocked to realize this! Furthermore, you were a little flabbergasted when he revealed that some of BroZone's songs were influenced by your music. You would stare at JD after he confessed such a large secret, "Wow... that's a big insult." You mumbled sarcastically under your breath. "EXCUSE ME?!" But you guessed JD missed the sarcasm. "I'm being sarcastic, love. That's kind of sweet." Playfully rolling your eyes, you pressed a kiss into JD's cheek before turning back to his brothers. You crossed your legs, rested your elbow against your knee, and held your face in your hands. "Now about you four, how about we get to actually know each other. I'm planning to remain in this family after all..."

ꨄ︎. Safe to say that JD is wifing/husbanding/etc. you up really quick.

ꨄ︎. He still brags about how he first got your number and how he managed to 'snatch you up' before anyone else could. You told him he's too old to use new lingo and to stop, lovingly of course as you didn't want your 'husband' to embarrass himself. He melted hearing you call him husband before getting a bigger ego boost; And you had fun watching him terrorize his siblings while his ego was so inflated. You even jokingly did the whole 'I'm watching you' eyes to one of his brothers (Clay) as a silent threat that this is how you were always going to hand JD off to them like. He gave you the biggest (playful) stink eye ever. Yeah, you're going to fit right into this family.

Let's Play Some Demos! - Part 8

Welcome to Part 8 of the Let's Play Some Demos! | LPSD series! For those who are new, I aim to introduce gamers to, usually, Indie games and to provide commentary and feedback on the games for educational purposes! For this episode, I, once again, perused through Steam's Demos Category to see what was available.

Today, I played demos for 4 games:

Detroit: Become Human – Available Detroit: Become Human puts the destiny of both mankind and androids in your hands, taking you to a near future where machines have become more intelligent than humans. Every choice you make affects the outcome of the game, with one of the most intricately branching narratives ever created.

Little Goody Two Shoes – Available Venture into the woods as you play Little Goody Two Shoes, a phantasmagorical horror narrative adventure where all your decisions matter!

Luma Island – Planned Release Date: Nov 20, 2024 Travel to Luma Island to go on an epic adventure by yourself or with your friends and family. Build your dream farm, master professions, collect magical Lumas, find treasures and unravel the mysteries of the island.

Tinkerlands Demo – Coming Soon This demo is your gateway into the vast world of Tinkerlands. Explore the island, craft equipment, build a settlement and fight monsters and bosses to survive, solo or in co-op!

The verdict?

Quick note, while doing the TIMESTAMPS for the video, I noticed Detroit: Become Human's demo lasted for, roughly, 20 minutes. Little Goody Two Shoes' lasted for an hour and 40 minutes-ish and Luma Island's lasted for 46 minutes-ish ONLY because I cut it short. I cut Tinkerlands short as well at, roughly, 47-ish minutes. Why is this interesting? I'll get to it.

Also, I had an ADHD moment. I mentioned in the video I didn't know Two Shoes was a horror game, and then I read the description IN THE BLOG POST again. Oh… Let's call it a "pleasant rediscovery"!

My favorite demo is a tie, to my surprise, between Little Goody Two Shoes and Tinkerlands. While I love all of them, Two Shoes being a horror game ACTUALLY didn't throw me (check out LPSD – Part 7, 2:32:28, for the last time I played a horror game) and I was sad when I reached the end of the demo and Tinkerlands sucked me in, proven by the fact I not only went quiet, but I kept delaying ending the video. I'm also pleasantly surprised their art styles didn't have me mentioning Super Lesbian Animal RPG. Almost every pixel art game does.

Two Shoes' story had me from the beginning, introductory cutscene! Even if Elise's complaints right afterward got on my nerves. And even after my somewhat loud frustration at there not being enough guidance to figure out where Elise's home was. My favorite part of the demo was when I talked about there being no map, and then it popped up! What excellent timing! I'm also a fan of how it's LGBT+! I wasn't expecting any romance and the fact all the options were women had me amused. And, because I forgot about the horror element, it was QUITE the twist! I had been wondering throughout the demo when the Hearts, health meter, was going to come into play. This Little Red Riding Hood retelling had me hooked until the demo ended! I wanted to keep playing…

I felt the same way about Tinkerlands. How many times did I say I was going to end the video, but kept playing instead? I had to practically yell at myself to get me to stop playing! I was HOOKED! I don't know what it is about games like this, but the inventory management, crafting, and exploring to get more resources, which then unlocks recipes, always make me happy! I don't think I've found one I didn't like. If I have I don't remember it. OH! And the fact I get to build a house is pretty neat, even if I don't really understand how it works, yet! I'm suddenly reminded of Skyrim (the only reason why I played it was to build the houses)!

Luma Island, a 3D and more focused version of Tinkerlands, had me mentioning Fae Farm repeatedly, which one would think isn't a good sign for it. However, it didn't make me want the game any less. There were some frustrating bits, like the fact the game didn't warn me how time worked. It told me to go talk to a guy, I ran around looking for the guy, but they didn't tell me he would only be available in the morning. The lack of a jump button was annoying as well. I had to run around a building because I couldn't get up at a certain spot because I couldn't jump. Fae Farm handled time better by making sleeping important and I was a jumping fool because it got me to places faster (check out LPSD – Part 4 & LPS$: Fae Farm – Part 2 for a laugh). Does the pixel art style have something to do with it? I can't remember playing a pixel art game where jumping was possible… If I find one, I'll update this section. If I remember. I also can't remember the last time I played a 3D pixel art game. It looked great!

Speaking of games that looked great, Detroit: Become Human handled as I expected it to. I'm a BIG fan of Beyond: Two Souls and don't share the same complaints many others have with the game's controls. I quite enjoy them! It feels more interactive than your usual "press a button to get something done" mechanics. And, being a fan of Quantic Dreams' games, if you wanna consider me biased, I can't really bitch. The graphics were exquisite, as usual. The voice acting was sublime, as usual. The story was enticing, as usual. I felt the usual tension regarding my choices; I was TERRIFIED I would fail to save the hostage! The "Story Tree" was a neat idea, too! AND, even though I enjoyed the controls, they had their usual issues. The camera, as usual, was a hassle. As was the lack of guidance on when I had control of the character. It also, as usual, screwed with my sense of direction. I’m biased, so I won’t end this with compliments.

Overall, I want ALL of the games! Luma Island and Tinkerlands aren't going to be demos I finish on stream, though. Too bad Detroit: Become Human and Little Goody Two Shoes were finished in the video…

As a reminder, Luma Island planned release date is Nov 20, 2024. Tinkerlands does not yet have a release date.

the last full month of summer is HERE! august is going to be a busy month for new releases, especially on the album front, but i'm excited! hopefully i can stay on top of it all!!! there were some pretty noteworthy tracks released this week!! here are my thoughts on them!!! also feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter <3

"Guess featuring Billie Eilish" - Charli xcx & Billie Eilish

Charli xcx has returned with yet another remix of a song from her phenomenal album BRAT - which I'm sure everyone is well aware of by now. More specifically the track "Guess" from the deluxe edition with Billie Eilish sliding in for a lustful feature. I can't say it's my favorite track from either the record itself or its remixes, but it is certainly a fun time. Yet another example of how BRAT is having the best rollout of any album of the decade thus far. I truly can't wait to see what she has in store next, I don't see BRAT summer ending anytime soon - despite what Pitchfork says. It might even bleed into BRAT autumn maybe even BRAT winter.

"FUKOUNA GIRL" - STOMACH BOOK

A few months removed from her sophomore record, STOMACH BOOK has returned with a new single. Crazy sounds on this one. A quirky blend of dance-punk and indietronica with some subtle hints of cabaret music. It feels like a circus! This kind of wacky blend of upbeat instrumentation with manic lyricism usually doesn't do much for me, but I think this song is a good time.

"M" - Soccer Mommy

I remember loving Soccer Mommy's third record, Clean, when I was in high school, but her music just hasn't stuck with me at all. Her more recent records have all been good, but not great. I'm waiting for something to blow me away and unfortunately, "M" still leaves me waiting. It's a fine piece of singer-songwriter music, but nothing about it really leaves a lasting impression on me. It captures a vibe very well though. If you want some bittersweet music to feel sad to, she has you covered here. Maybe her upcoming album Evergreen will surprise me despite it all.

"HIGHJACK" - A$AP Rocky feat. Jessica Pratt

I was not expecting this at all. I had to do a triple take when I saw that A$AP Rocky had a new single dropping that featured JESSICA PRATT. The same Jessica Pratt who makes the otherworldly folk and brill-building songs that sound completely removed from the current time? Apparently so. She absolutely kills it here and I hope this leads more people to listen to her music. Rocky puts in some really good verses too, I was impressed! You can also definitely tell this song was called "Like That," but it had to be changed for obvious reasons. Anyways, this is a totally unexpected collaboration that kinda knocked it out of the park.

"GYAT" - Ice Spice

"GYAT" is the lone bonus track on the deluxe edition, of which there are many, of her new album Y2K! I don't even know what to say about this. Why is this a bonus track? The album is already like 23 minutes long and this is like definitely in-line with the rest of the tracks on the record. Why wasn't this just included? At the end of the day, this is just same old, same old Ice Spice. The only thing notable about this song is that it's the first time I've ever typed out the word "GYAT."

"Here's the Thing" - Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C. are three-for-three when it comes to the singles for their upcoming album. This one is definitely a bit more raucous than the previous, but it's just so enjoyable. The band really sound like they're onto something brilliant here. Just some endlessly enjoyable rock tunes that feel like they breeze past you while still leaving an impression. Lead vocalist Grian Chatten really shines here too. I'm loving these new songs and I can't wait to dive into Romance in a few weeks!

"Once a Bunch" - Adrianne Lenker

Adrianne Lenker has returned with presumably a leftover from her excellent album Bright Future from a few months ago - still one of the best of the year. This one leans heavily into the country sound. Very raw, duet-driven country with some vivid songwriting that you can just close your eyes and dream to. Whenever I write about Lenker, I always have to say that she's one of the greatest songwriters of our time and "Once a Bunch" is yet another example. Loving this track to death.

"Summer 2000 Baby" | "Take a Trip" - TV Girl & George Clanton

Spotify algorithm core band TV Girl have teamed up with George Clanton to release perhaps their best material to date. Clanton's impeccable ear for great sounds elevates these songs. A lot of "vibe" songs just float past you leaving you nothing of substance, but most things Clanton gets his fingers on just have a kick to them. You just get lost in his songs and these two are no different. "Summer 2000 Baby" is an upbeat jam and "Take a Trip" is much more chilled-out, but both are pretty great. If you're looking for some late-summer tunes, TV Girl and George Clanton made a gift just for you.

"Continuum 1" - Nala Sinephro

Nala Sinephro is returning soon with a brand new album, the follow-up to her great debut Space 1.8 from 2021. This lead single features black midi's Morgan Simpson on drums and James Mollison on saxophone. This is a great cut. Builds very nicely on the foundation set by her debut while throwing in new bits that make things feel fresh. I especially love the oscillating synths towards the end and how they pair with Mollison's saxophone. If this song is any indication, we're in for a treat when Endlessness drops.

"INSTANT TRANSFER" - E L U C I D feat. billy woods

ELUCID and billy woods reunite for this single taken from the former's upcoming album. These two just have some of the strongest chemistry of any rap duo in recent memory. "INSTANT TRANSFER" is an intense banger with an almost ominous beat. It's arresting, like a lot of their work is. I'm not super well-versed with ELUCID's solo work, but I'll definitely have to give this record a listen when it drops.

"Lullaby" - Ichiko Aoba

No surprises here. This new Ichiko Aoba song is stunning. You know what you're in for when you dive into one of her songs, yet it never ceases to amaze. She writes some of the most gorgeous, serene, and intricate songs you will ever hear. Everything sounds meaningful. Every word she sings, every note she strums, every piece of the arrangement has a purpose. All of this to say, "Lullaby" is amazing and I can't wait for whatever we hear from her next.

"Coyote (Live at the Forum, Montreal, QC, Canada 12/4/1975)" - Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell is preparing to release another volume in her Archives series, this one focusing on her material from the late 70s. This excites me as Hejira is my favorite work of hers and I'm stoked to hear more stuff from that era. The first taste we're getting is this early live performance of "Coyote," one of her best songs. There's an urgency to this version, it's just Joni and her guitar. No Jaco Pastorius bass playing to be found. It's an interesting version, but if you're not a Joni superfan like I am, your mileage may vary.

"For Cryin' Out Loud!" - FINNEAS

I've never really listened to FINNEAS' work outside of his work with his sister Billie Eilish and sadly I can't say I'm too impressed by this new track, the lead single to his upcoming album. It certainly sounds great, everything has a punch to it, but nothing else stands out. It plays into the tropes you would expect. The horn arrangements are also a bit flimsy, which is wild because everything else has a bite! That should too! This song is just fine at best.

"Sunshine" - Kelly Lee Owens

I lose track of Kelly Lee Owens every couple years, but I managed to catch this new single "Sunshine." This is a pretty good house cut, really showcasing her talents as a producer. Everything sounds so euphoric, very easy to get lost in, which is a quality I admire in a lot of house music. I want the music to sweep me off my feet. One of these days I need to go back through and catch up on her stuff.

"Don't Get Me Started" - The Smile

The Smile have returned months removed from their second album with a new single. "Don't Get Me Started" sees the band getting very electronic with it, which does obscure some of the best aspects of the band, but it's still a pretty solid track. I always love how Thom Yorke sounds against very electronic sonic palettes, so this is like ear candy for me. Who knows if this is just a throwaway or a teaser to yet another album from the band? Either way, this side-project continues to be very fruitful for everyone involved.

"Lifetimes" - Katy Perry

After her last single "Woman's World" crashed and burned, Katy Perry is back with the second single to her new album, 143 - her big play at being relevant once again. Unfortunately for her, "Lifetimes" is a miss as well. I've seen the word "stale" be thrown around in regard to these new songs and I couldn't agree more. Her desire for this to be a comeback for her is so noticeable for any listener with half of a brain that it reeks of desperation. This is the album rollout equivalent of the Titanic sinking.

"People Need People" - JOBA

BROCKHAMPTON alumni JOBA has released another really good single in anticipation for his debut solo project. This shift into more traditional pop sounds doesn't sound like it should work on paper, but he pulls it off very well. "People Need People" ditches the glam rock of the previous single in favor of more mellow baroque and psychedelic pop. The string arrangements and those bouncy synth riffs during the second verse are also very nice touches. This is a really good track, I can't wait to hear what else he has in store for us. JOBA is making the most interesting solo music out of all of his former boyband members.

100 GIGS - Drake

When I saw the words "Drake" and "100 GBs" in the same headline, I feared for the worst. Luckily, he just dumped 100 GBs of stuff onto the internet. This includes songs, videos, unused album art, and a whole bunch of stuff. Three of those songs made their way to streaming and they're all pretty unremarkable. "It's Up" sounds the most finished and it features 21 Savage as well as Young Thug, it's nothing stand out though. The other two tracks feel pretty lazy, rife with boring hooks and poor mixing. Definitely sounds like stuff that needed more time in the oven. I don't really know what his rationale was for dumping all of this on us, but it certainly isn't the best look after the beef he decisively lost against Kendrick Lamar over the last few months.

Movies To Watch When You're Alone on Thanksgiving Part I of Who the Hell Cares

Though this is not my first holiday or even my first Thanksgiving alone, for some reason the deafening solitude is hitting a little harder than usual. My parents are together. My brothers with their families. My friends thousands of miles away. My fiancé with her friends and family. And me. Surrounded by three small old dogs and an empty house... and fridge. So as only I know how I embark on finding the best movies to soothe my soul and hopefully distract me from my anxiety. Onward.

It is 12:30pm and I have watched two movies so far. Two of my favorites. Tried and true for lonely days Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and Stuck in Love (2012) are sure to entertain and distract in the best of ways. But lets break it down.

First off. Is there ever really a bad time for a good Wes Anderson flick? One of my favorite elements of Wes Anderson is the consistency of which the films are produced. Though some could criticize that employing the same troupe of actors time and again would lead to a certain boredom surrounding performances. Maybe you get tired of the symmetry repetitively exercised visually. When I'm alone my anxiety sky rockets. I think about what everyone is doing without me. All the fun I'm missing out on yet again. Is anybody even thinking about me? My mind moves too fast for meditation. But the familiar cadence of the actors lines, the constant symmetry, and wholesome stories soothe my worried thoughts like ASMR. Some find the sound of whispering and fucking with the teeth of a comb soothing, I find certain movies to be my ASMR. Therefore my top suggestion for honestly any lonely day is a good Wes Anderson flick. The characters will keep you company, the stories will warm you, and for two hours you will forget that you were ever alone.

Stuck In Love (2012) Josh Boone

On the completely other end of the spectrum is Josh Boone's emotional drama Stuck in Love. Now anyone who knows me would be surprised that I would pick a sappy movie like Stuck in Love as one of the best movies for being alone. The whole movie is about love and connection and family when my wheelhouse is horror, crimes, thrillers, violence. On a daily basis I fill my days with the darkest and most fucked up movies I can find, but, those who actually know me know that I love a good sap fest. I watched the Kissing Booth multiple times a week for months and I don't even fuck with Joey King like that. Anyway back to my point. The movie centers around a dysfunctional family made up mostly of writers. The mother Erica, played by Jennifer Connelly, cheated and left her husband, Greg Kinnear, three years prior. Their 19yr old daughter, Lily Collins, resents her mother for hurting her father and copes with the failures of their marriage through pessimism, cynicism, and promiscuity. On the other hand the high-school aged son, Nat Wolff, is overly sensitive. A hopeless romantic with dreams of being the next Steven King. While yes, the cast is star studded. The Hollywood production value is barely muffled by the soft indie cinematography. Yet every time I watch this at different points in my life I find myself relating to different characters along the way. If I feel I can relate to each characters experiences across the board whether an unsatisfied housewife, disenchanted daughter, or stoner outcast I can remind myself that other people feel exactly like me. So many in fact that books and movies are made just about us. In that sense though I am watching another family celebrate while I'm alone its almost as if they're right here with me. Reminding me that dysfunction, loneliness, and darkness are only temporary. This on one day out of 365. It really is just a blip.

What is your favourite Thai dish? I’m not really into spicy foods but our local Thai restaurant does a really nice sweet and sour pork dish with coconut rice which is amazing. They also do really good duck spring rolls.

How many contacts do you have in your phone? Not very many lol, maybe about 25-30.

When was the last time you made out with somebody? I don’t remember, I don’t really enjoy making out.

Do you have any friends that seem to know all the hot gossip? Hahah yeah, my husband is awful for gossiping.

Is there anybody else in the room you’re currently in? Simba is curled up next to me and the dog is sprawled out under his blanket. The other cats are in the kitchen and Mike is on the way home from work.

Would you rather travel to Japan or Scotland? Japan. Scotland is only two hours away and we’ve been loads of times.

I'm feeling very grateful. Grateful for my friends even though they were my husband's friends first. Grateful for my husband for truly being my best friend.

JK birthday party was on Friday night. We had dinner with NM first at Sara the Wine Bar. It's so rare that we get to eat good Italian food so I loved that. NM gives the best hugs in the world. I almost cried when she hugged me so tight after not seeing each other in what feels like a few years.

After dinner we went to NoHo to the JKs bar. 80/90s themed. He told me I looked as beautiful as ever. I'm not sure he thought I was in theme even though 90s is my usual aesthetic. The music was great until I said it out loud, then the DJ played Earth, Wind, and Fire. Very much 70s.

G knew a few of the other people there from working on their movie.

Saturday we met NK at Lauren's parents house for her birthday party. It was super awkward and we sat in the corner and talked to each other for a good part of the time. I ate a hotdog with just ketchup because it was all they had for the first time ever. It wasn't bad, but I dont like to think about it too much because it actually was.

We stayed for a couple hours before going to Ghengis Cohen for Chinese food and to see The Brother Brothers. The venue was small and everyone was over 5'8" so I could barely see anything. They were still absolutely wonderful. G and I talked in the car for a long time about me feeling like I'm constantly gasping for air in the world.

I tell him that I missed so many opportunities when I was young because I was dumb and grew up so fast.

"How can we recreate these things for you?" He asked. "You can't, they're gone. The time has past and I'm almost 30."

"We could crash a frat party when we're in Indy, would that help?" He said. I appreciate him trying to make me feel better, but he will never understand what it's like to feel like you have to provide. Provide for yourself and another person that you held onto ao tightly that you smothered them. You crushed their wings and got them oily with your finger tips to the point where they would never fly again.

I get so overwhelmed by my sadness and by the loss that I experienced in such a short time. All the people that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to. It feels like it could actually swallow me whole and one day I will be nothing more than a dead follower you don't want to delete.

On Sunday I painted our cabinets. G playfully yelled at me over and over for not changing into painting clothes. Finally i whipped off my sweatshirt revealing nothing underneath and asked, "is this better? Is this what you want?" He looked at me with the hungiest of eyes that actually made my stomach jump. Ooh, we have a clear winner this time!

Final Fantasy II - While not my favorite Final Fantasy by any means, I remember having fun with this one. It tried out some rather revolutionary things for its time, and introduced some staples of the Final Fantasy franchise. I was surprised to discover it was this game that introduced chocobos; they're such a fixture, I would have expected them to have been in the first game too. Also, this game taught me the word "doppelganger" - the battle against which was one of the more memorable ones, I think.

Oregon Trail II - I didn't play this game as much as the first one, but I remember it was a lot easier. I probably only made it to Willamette Valley twice in the first one, but I could get to the end of Oregon Trail II most times I actually played it all the way through. I also remember the buffalo moved waaaaaay faster in the second game, so it was a lot harder to shoot them. It's like they were on roller skates or something, scooting back and forth in front of you.

Stairs - Not surprised at all nobody voted for this. Very obscure indie horror game that unfortunately I remember most for giving me motion sickness ^^' The ending was really scary, but mostly I found it kind of forgettable.

Another Code: Two Memories - An underrated gem of an adventure game for the DS. I was mostly interested in it because it was made by the same people who made Hotel Dusk, which was basically the whole reason I got a DS in the first place. It's definitely not as good as Hotel Dusk, but I liked it. I should probably play it again sometime, because I don't remember the story very well at all.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - This adventure game will live forever in infamy with me and my siblings because of its weird voice acting. Some lovely examples we still quote to each other, some fifteen years later: "The door. Was locked." "It didn't work." "Hi! I'm George Stobbart." It was kind of like a lower-quality Last Express to me, and the mechanics could be really clunky. But that might have been because I played the Wii port, so maybe it would have been fine if I'd been using a mouse instead of a Wiimote.

F-Zero X - Classic racing game. So many good memories of playing this with my siblings. While racing games are usually not my style, we had lots of fun with it. I still distinctly remember the first time we played the Sand Ocean level, where you can go spinning around and around through the tunnel and go flying through the air if you pop out while still on the ceiling, and we were all whooping for the sheer joy of it ^_^ (But Mute City will always have the best F-Zero music <3)

Five Nights at Freddy's 3 - In my opinion, the weakest of the series. For one thing, it's not set at an actual Freddy's location, but a recreated "haunted house" type attraction, so most of the spooky stuff there is supposed to look spooky and, ironically, ends up less so :/ As soon as you figure out the gimmick of the game, which I did on Night 2, the tension and creep factor goes way down. I was about as bored as you can possibly be when winding up a music box and fixing faulty wiring to keep a mangy, haunted animatronic from coming and eating your face :P

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream - I was really surprised to see that this one won! I thought for sure it would be too old and obscure for anyone to have even heard of it, let alone played it. I haven't read the short story it's based on, but it certainly made for a trippy (and kind of depressing) post-apocalyptic game! @_@ What I find most fascinating is that Harlan Ellison wrote the dialogue for the game and did the voice acting for the computer AM, even though he said he hated video games. Maybe he just wanted to make sure they did it right...? In any case, I'm sure that's why the game's dialogue is so good, even if the voice acting is a bit meh.

An Exploration

Exploring Mexico City and you (M)

“Are you sure we can’t stay another day to explore?” Ian asked.

“I can’t possibly explore Mexico City in half a day!! There’s so many sights to see!” you protested.

“And food to eat,” Ian added.

“And a bajillion museums to explore!”

Scott was flustered with your arguments. He was like a father debating with his children. “Even I would like to stay but we can’t derail the schedule. Our fans have been waiting long enough,” he said exasperatedly.

“We tried,” Ian sighed. He put his arm around your shoulders and kissed the crown of your head softly to console you.

You held the hand that was dangling by your shoulders and leaned on to his chest. “We’ll have to narrow it down to one to two places.”

The two of you always set aside time to explore in each stop of the tour. You tagged along the tour for work and to travel with Ian, which basically killed two birds with one stone. But time was always of the essence and you were always limited to visiting spots that were either near your hotel or the venue.

Ian thought about it as the two of you watched Dabin go through sound check. “We can still go to Coyoacán,” he suggested.

Coyoacán was home to The Frida Kahlo Museum and the National Watercolor Museum which were some of the museums you wanted to visit, and Cineteca Nacional which was on Ian’s list. It was also quite near the venue.

“The museums will be closed by then,” you groaned.

“A lot of places will be closed by the time the show ends,” Ian countered.

“I guess we can still walk around the neighborhood then maybe catch a movie at Cineteca Nacional. And then plan on when to come back so I get to visit all the museums I want!” you exclaimed, quickly recovering from the thought of not being able to visit the places you wanted.

“We always say that in every stop of this tour,” Ian said which made both of you break into laughter.

You broke away from Ian and proceeded to work. John took the videos and you took the photographs and the two of you were also in charge of uploading these contents into the social media pages of DPR.

The meet and greet photos were also taken by you and you loved how Ian doesn’t just smile at the camera, he’s smiling at you. It made you feel giddy inside but you had to keep it professional at all times.

During the actual show, you shuffled between the front of the stage and on the actual stage to snap photos, which was a workout in itself.

After the show, the boys took a quick five just to quickly hydrate themselves before going out to do the encore.  The boys usually took showers after the show and everyone ate dinner after while waiting for the crowd to dissipate before leaving the venue.

You and Ian excused yourselves and made your way to Coyoacán via train to get to feel more of the city. As you alight the station, you pulled up the maps app for directions. The two of you headed first to the Frida Kahlo museum so you can “cross it off” your list of places to visit as it was already closed. Then you walked further down the street to take pictures of the colorful houses before walking back towards Cineteca Nacional.

You settled on the last showing of one of the indie films that was being shown so you can also explore the outdoor forum of the Cineteca. You browsed the stores until it was time for the movie to start.

The movie had no English subtitles and you had to rely on the tone of voice and the acting to understand what was happening and you made a mental note to look up the movie later on to see if you understood it correctly.

“That was an experience,” Ian declared as the two of you exited the cinema.

“I’m still confused as to what actually happened in the movie,” you replied as you search for the plot online on your phone.

Ian grabbed your hand as you walked. “Where to next?” he asked.

You tuck your phone away. “Back to the hotel I guess? Unless you want to go for a quick drink? But we have an early flight tomorrow,” you reasoned.

“You’re right. Anyway there are other things I can explore,” Ian said while eyeing you suggestively.

“What exactly?” you asked despite already knowing what he meant.

He turned you to face him, and he cupped your face with his hands and placed soft kisses on your lips. “You,” he said in between kisses causing you to giggle.

“Stooop! We’re in public!” You whined as you playfully slapped his arms away.

Ian dropped his hands and grabbed yours as he headed to the street and hailed the first cab he saw. He behaved himself in the cab and so did you. You were in a different country and you were afraid to potentially disrespect the cab driver. However, he still found a way to tease by squeezing your thigh once near your knee and again closer to your crotch. He smirked as he saw you bite back your gasp, knowing well what his touch does to you.

He held your hand as you exited the cab and made your way to the lobby. The elevator was empty when it opened and you quickly pressed on the close button and your floor to make sure you got the elevator all to yourselves. Ian was latched on to your lips as soon as the doors closed, pulling your head up as he tugged on your lower lip, causing you to whimper at the roughness of his actions. He placed a hand on the back of your head to prevent you from hitting it as he pushed you against an elevator wall, grinding his hips against yours as soon as your back hit the wall. He moved to kiss your jaw then your neck, each kiss becoming sloppier than the previous. You gripped his sides as he kissed you then you circled your arms around his waist, closing the gap as much as possible as he grinded against you.

The elevator dinged, causing both of you to stop and check at which floor it stopped. It stopped just a floor below yours and the two of you had to compose yourselves as a group of people heading to the rooftop filed in. You instinctively stood in front of Ian to cover his budding erection.

You reached your floor and you pulled Ian along as you exited the elevator. You ran to your room once you were away from the elevators, Ian just behind you. You stood against the door as Ian fumbled his pockets for the keycard. He opened the door and he pushed you inside and pinned you against the nearest wall then kicked the door closed.

“Where were we?” Ian asked.

“Here,” you mumble against his lips. You cupped his face as you kissed him, Ian deepening the kiss immediately. You dragged one hand down his chest and abdomen, down to his crotch and you stroked him over his jeans causing a low moan to escape his lips. You continued stroking him as you held him by the shoulder with your other hand and turned him, reversing your positions. He let you unbuckle his jeans and drag it down to his ankles. I have never written anything for an actual person. For my own comfort, I will not be referring to Cillian’s actual family and, instead, I have created two small biographies for the Reader and Cillian.

Biography:

The Reader:

The Reader is 24 years old and recently moved to Dublin with her 5 year old son, Max in order to take up a fantastic job offer.

Max’s father isn’t interested in a relationship with his son and separated from the Reader pretty much as soon as she found out that she was pregnant. 

The Reader is a novelist and editor for the Irish Times. 

The Reader’s interests include books, listening to records, theatre and attending live music gigs. 

The Reader has a close relationship with her grandmother who is 65 years old and a writer herself. She also lives in Dublin with her second husband, who is originally from Galway.

 Cillian: 

Cillian is 42 years old in this story. He is divorced from his wife Siobhan and has two kids, Charlie (6) and Hendricks (8).

He lives in a town house in Dublin and shares custody.

In this story, he finished filming Season 4 of Peaky Blinders about three months ago, which is when the Reader first met him.

JUST FRIENDS

Three and a half months ago you moved to Dublin to take a position as editor at the Irish Times. Initially, the move was daunting to you as you were a single mother and moving your son to a different preschool concerned you.

Fortunately, your grandmother was living in Dublin as well and offered to help you with looking after your son, Max. She was a retired novelist herself and you always had a close relationship with her. Having her around was a blessing.

Over the years, you also met some Irish writers and established good relationships with them. Therefore, finding friends in Dublin was not an issue.

One of your best friends was a play writer from London and was working in Ireland at the time, promoting her theatre play called ‘Blessings’. She introduced you to a bunch of people, most of which were working in the entertainment industry in some way or another.

Whilst all of your new found friends were a fair bit older than you, you related to them. You had interests in common and most of them had children, just like you. They understood that sometimes plans had to be cancelled and flexibility was limited. Having children is a commitment which many of your younger friends didn’t understand. You weren’t interested in late nights because a young child meant early mornings. For this reason, you would much rather attend a dinner and board game night as a opposed to a night club.

And this is how you met a very interesting man named Cillian. Three months ago, your friend Orla invited you to a board game night with a couple of her friends. Cillian was pretty much the only other single person in attendance and, since this was a board game that had to be played in teams of two, you and Cillian were paired up with him.

He was funny and smart and very attractive. You had a good time that night and even won the game with your combined knowledge of random trivial facts.

He was a fun person to be around and you had several common interests.

Over the next few months, you spent a fair bit of time together, mostly with other friends but sometimes alone when your friends were doing things as couples with their partners.

Just recently, you went record shopping together and the weekend before last you and another friend of yours would take all of your kids to Dublin Zoo for the day. Your son Max developed a great friendship with Cillian’s youngest son Charlie. Playdates were a common occurrence.

While both of you separately explored the dating world, you really enjoyed Cillian’s company as a friend and he enjoyed yours and you would often chat about the mishaps you encountered and laugh about them. Dates gone wrong was one of your favourite topics.

The last relationship Cillian had was with a co-worker, which was far from ideal. They’ve met on set of one of his movies about a year after he divorced from his wife, but things didn’t go as planned and the relationship didn’t last. It ended about four months ago, being just one month before you met.

The last relationship you had was over a year ago and it also didn’t last as your boyfriend couldn’t deal with the fact that you were a single mum and that your son always came first.

For Valentines Day this year, your friends set up dates for each of you. It was disastrous. Neither of you were interested in committing at this point and you both were rather flustered about your friends’ efforts after you both had told them not to bother.

You were happy singles.

Theatre Night

As happy singles, you decided to go and see your friend’s new play ‘Blessings’ with some of your other friends on the night you all managed to be child free for once. It took a while to organise but was worth the effort.

‘Hi Max, how was preschool?’ Cillian asked as he opened the door to your townhouse for Cillian while you were in the bathroom, putting up your hair.

Max met Cillian numerous times and got along with him very well. After all, Cillian had a son the same age as Max.

‘Good. Do you want me to show you what I made?’ Max asked while you waived at Cillian from the bathroom.

‘Absolutely, show me’ Cillian said with a smile as he followed Max into the living room.

‘Look’ Max said as he held up two paintings.

‘Wow, is that a T-Rex?’ Cillian asked, causing Max to nod with excitement.

‘That’s very cool…he looks super scary’ Cillian added just as there was another knock on the door.

It was your grandmother who was here to pick up Max for his sleepover at her house.

You opened the door and asked Max to get his bag from the living room which you had packed for him earlier.

‘Nan, this is my friend Cillian’ you said as you introduced Cillian to your grandmother.

‘Hello Cillian, I am Margot. I loved Grief is a Thing with Feathers. It was such an intense play’ she said, knowing right away who he was despite the fact that you had never mentioned him to her before.

‘Thank you Margot and I loved By The Sea, it was a fantastic book’ Cillian responded. He read the book after you told him about your grandmother. Your writing style was very similar to hers and he always loved a good book.

‘Oh thank you very much. Now Max, are you ready?’ your grandmother asked.

Max was ready and you said goodbye, giving him a big hug and thanking your grandmother for looking after him for the night.

While Cillian waited in the living room, you finished your make up and slipped on your shoes.

‘Thank you for picking me up. I really have no idea where this place is’ you said as you grabbed your bag and the two of you were heading out of the door.

‘Any time Y/N, it isn’t far from here actually’ Cillian said.

As you were walking to the Arthouse Theatre you talked about all sorts of things, music, childcare and books.

It was a cold night in Dublin and you were probably underdressed for the occasion.

At the Arthouse Theatre you met up with another two friends of yours. They were both married, to each other, and shared three children. Luckily for them, they had a baby sitter that night.

The play was amazing and you all enjoyed it with a few glasses of wine which were served at the theatre. Cillian had good taste when it came to wine and you usually sought his guidance on what to order.

After you left the theatre, you felt awfully hungry. You hadn’t eaten dinner that night.

‘I am starving, is anyone else up for Pizza?’ you asked your three friends, including Cillian

‘We would love to, but only have a baby sitter until 9pm, sorry’ Amanda said, explaining that she and her husband had to head home fairly soon.

‘What about you Cilly?’ you asked.

‘I would love some Pizza, let’s go to Pizzinis’ he said.

Both you and Cillian said goodbye to your friends and made your way to Pizzinis.

As usual, it was packed and there were no table available.

‘Wanna grab them take away and go back to my place? I’ve got wine and you can show me this new album you were talking about earlier’ you said.

‘Sounds good, let’s do that’ Cillian said before ordering two pizzas.

More than Friends

You arrived at your apartment about 30 minutes later and Cillian put on some music. He found this new Irish band he liked and you were really keen to hear them.

‘Hmm Indie…I like it’ you said as he connected his i-phone to your speakers.

‘Wine?’ you asked as you grabbed a bottle of wine from the shelf.

‘Yes please and thanks’ Cillian said as he put the pizzas on the table.

‘I was meant to ask you, how was your Valentine’s date?’ Cillian asked before taking the first bite of the pizza.

‘Oh god, don’t remind me on it please’ you said with a laugh.

‘That good ey? What happened?’ Cillian laughed.

‘He was weird. He basically left after I told him about Max’ you responded.

‘I think that sometimes guys your age might be a bit freaked out by the fact that you have child. I can’t say that I blame them. I couldn’t imagine myself becoming a step father when I was in my 20s’ Cillian said.

‘He was 32’ you responded.

‘Well maybe he was just weird and you are just unlucky when it comes to dating’ Cillian laughed.

‘Yeah, maybe…I am just over dating’ you said…’What about your date?’ you asked.

‘Pretty average. I mean she was nice but had no sense of humour’ Cillian said.

‘Oh what, wait…she didn’t laugh at your Irish jokes?’ you laughed.

‘Outrageous I know. I mean how could she not?’ Cillian joked.

‘Here is to failed dates’ you said as you held up your wine glass for a toast.

‘To failed dates’ Cillian responded with smile.

‘You don’t have to answer this, but when was the last time that…?’ Cillian asked and, before he could finish his question, you interrupted him.

‘That I had sex? Gosh…well over a year ago’ you responded, causing Cillian’s chin to drop.

‘Over a year? Seriously? I mean, surely, a woman like you would get plenty of offers…’ Cillian said, not knowing what else to tell you.

Don’t Say No Ep 9 (Line) - It’s my corny af hurt/comfort soap opera that I watch at 1.5x and skip all the sex scenes and Fiat crying, but I like it that way, so there. Yes I am one of those people who only eats the outside of the peanut M&Ms, why do you ask? Episode recaps here. 

Bite Me Ep 5 (Viu & Viki) - sometimes I feel like this show is skipping all the important bits, or having them occur off screen intentionally, like some ancient Greek play. Still, the depth of the feeling understood between the two leads is clearly transferred to us despite that. Are they dating? Sure seems that way. Without anything being actually said about it. It’s oddly magical. I talked a bit about the north/south divide and food as a love language with regards to kao soi in this post.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Love is Science? (BL sub plot on Viki) Ep 14 (aired ep 15) - Taiwanese drama finally got subbed yesterday, so those of us who are waiting seem to be on a week’s delay. The BL couple actually has the most interesting story arc and the most unusual character growth. I’m enjoying how unpredictable these two are. Honestly, they could have gotten their own series with this much story - and now I really want that for after the baby comes. I’m a little sad we didn’t get the coming out in the skate park sequence (LOOK I love coming out drama, especially with sporty friends, it’s a THING), but I also get why the writers are doing what they are with these boys. And the actors sure can handle it. Taiwan at it’s finest.  

Love Is the series (YouTube) Ep 5 - continues to be fine for a V-BL but not all that actually good. 

See You After Quarantine? (Viki) Ep 6, 7 - Taiwanese gameboys with Japanese talent stuck in, what more could we ask? AND THEN they gave us some *thirsty boi* action, great kisses, and charmed the pants off... well... everyone. Taiwan, we don’t deserve you. Honestly, you spoil us. Turns out Aaron Lai is the best wingman any gay Japanese man in quarantine could ask for. Everyone should be watching this. It’s utterly charming. 

The Tasty Florida (Viki) Ep 3 & 4 - this Korean BL so fucking cute. Look it’s formless and too short but simultaneously aching and kinda special-sweet. I’m not asking for much, just 15 min+ of fresh content with at least a 10 ep arc. 

In Case You Missed It

Someone dropped K-BL movie cut of 2015′s The Lover series onto YouTube. The series was about 4 different couples all living in the same apartment complex, one of the 4 was a BL plot about a sunshine sweetie Japanese tourist who ends up roommates with a hot shy tsundere Korean boy. It’s 1.5 hours, proving Korea and stretch its BL when it wants to.

GOSSIP!

Rumors of OhmFluke to star in new Thai BL Oh! My Sunshine Night. It’s from Newsinfinity Entertainment who announced the casting and showed the couple in workshops. This is this (small) production house’s first BL and they aim to “appeal to to general audiences* with a “broader view of BL that everyone will watch.” Which is code for LOW heat, light gay, soft boys. If this happens I think we can expect this to be Thailand doing Korean-style BL. 

* GENERAL AUDIENCE? Let’s be clear no piece of media will EVER appeal to everyone. Here is the USA “general audience” is code for “families with socially conservative values and children who are still minors” AKA what used to be prime time TV watchers AKA suburbia. 

 The concept is analytically old fashioned and so fractured at this juncture (socially economically spatially politically) that “general audience” is actually impossible to target and it doesn’t really exist. But try telling that to the publicity department. 

We also call this the “Disney live action demo.” (Think Pirates of the Caribbean.) I occasionally refer to them as “the Simpsons.” And they’re about as realistic. All that to say I am VERY suspicious of Oh! My Sunshine Night‘s production house. 

To My Star does seem to be getting a second season, same director, same mains. Korea is much better about executing on its promises than Thailand, but until I see proof of filming or an honest trailer, my favorite boys are staying in the gossip section. I don’t wanna get my hopes up. (Honestly now, how many of you also want an alt reality with these two as a couple but Kim Kang Min playing his long suffering cardiologist intern character from Hospital Playlist? Just me?) 

I reported on Unforgotten Night a while ago. It seems to have been fully cast now, I still think the publicity stills make it look like a joke. But with this line-up I guess it’s even more of an alt answer to KinnPorsche. 

You know that thing that happens in media when suddenly we get multiples of the same style of movie or show at once? It’s now happening with BL. Love triangles. Restaurants. And now mafia. 

Cutie Pie (our arranged marriage Thai BL staring Zee) dropped some wardrobe fitting photo ops. Also... fancy pants sexy suits that fit, so that’s exciting. 

Starting Soon

My Mate Match from Starhunter should be starting on Line TV next Saturday. Usually, Line has subs relatively quickly and is available internationally. However the fact that the trailer is not subbed and the show is not listed on Line’s site has me nervous. No idea on length of run either. 

Starhunter studio doesn’t have a great track record in general for narrative arcs and this one is not based on a y-novel so could get waffly. This is a roommates love triangle BL about a boy who is looking for one roommate and ends up with two vying for his home and his heart. Stars Jet as the uke lead which I’m pretty happy about as he’s got great comedic timing and is accustomed to BL. He’s opposite two friends/co-actors from Gen Y and other projects, so we know they’re comfortable with each other. They could do great things... if they get a decent script.

This is sort if in response to the fanfic anon. In my humble opinion one should not look to fiction (especially the fantasy driven faire that is most ff) to morally, socially or historically educate people. Fiction can have sociopolitical themes and bring contemporary issues to life, but it is also usually framed and governed by a specific narrative.

Take Jane Austen's works for example. (I, like many people around here, enjoy reading them so that is why I am using them as an example). So, reading Austen, you get swept up in the romance and tension of the narrative. You also get a bit of the reality of social stratification and wealth distribution of the regency era- keeping in mind that servants rarely have much more than one line speaking roles and most heroines (basically, the pov) are landed gentry living in comfortable circumstances and afforded a lot of leisure time in which to fall in love and read poetry. Reading her books, one can easily forget about contemporanious events like the Napoleonic Wars and the persistent horrors of the slave trade. In 'Mansfeild Park', the slave trade is directly mentioned for the first and only time in her canon. The context? The heroine's failed attempt to engage her uncle in conversation (said Uncle owns a plantation in Antigua). Fanny's Uncle, Aunt and cousins- one of whom she will marry by the end of the novel- owe their wealth to slavery. This is acknowledged, and a lot if scholars say that Austen was condemning the existence of slavery in her own subtle way, but then... you just kind of move on. The books continues. The food that is being eaten, the dresses worn, the houses and fripperies, everything material, is there because of the plantation overseas. And yet we are supposed- and most people do- continue on with the story and invest emotionally in the romance of the two romantic leads.

During Austen's lifetime, British ships were involved in transporting enslaved people from the eastern seaboard of Africa to the West Indies and the American South. The horror was profitable to the nation. Of the 74, 000 slaves being transported at the peak, 38, 000 would have travelled on British ships. Though Britain's involvement in the slave trade was abolished in 1807, it was not until 1833 that slavery was made illegal in Britain (32 years before the United States).

The reason I say all this is because even though Austen's works are beloved and considered classics, even though they are said by many to be steeped in a kind of proto feminism, and considered valuable and timeless, they do not portray EVERYTHING- namely the horrifying and the unspeakable- that was going on in their era- even that which affects the main characters. So is this a moral failure? Is this an artistic failure? Many people think not. Some think so. Applying current day social standards to historical works can be a minefield.

Maybe fanfics are a lower rent version of this. In a time when many LGBTQ+ people are being persecuted in parts of the world (and there is no legal protection of the human rights of sexual minorities in Jikook's own country), people still use the narrative of a same sex relationship as escapist fantasy. I can understand where some members of the lgbtq+ community might be unhappy with this. (I am lgbt and ok with it, but that's just a personal, subjective thing). Hopefully, people whose imaginations are captured by Jikook (or anyone else), can parlay that interest and support into educating themselves about the real life plight of lgbtq+people around the world. Having a parasocial or personal investment in the happiness of someone you think might* be a member of a marginalized minority hopefully leads people to read, learn and do more.

Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei once said that, 'if anything, art is... about morals, about our beleif in humanity. Without that, there simply is no art.'

Not all creative imput has to explicitly address injustice or politics. Not every lgbtq character has to be politicized. Figuring out what one personally considers to be 'harmless fun' and what may be misguided or hurtful can be very complicated. Listening to people, reading and learning certainly helps.

*Also, fiction is weird. It can be totally morally rotton and come from baaaaaaad people and still have certain objective artistic merits (???). You can read a novel from the pov of a twisted, evil person and find yourself weirdly empathizing. You can go on a journey through the eyes of an anti hero. You can commit crimes. You can explore eroticism that you wouldn't want to explore irl. You can read propaganda and be like 'hmm but it's fun tho'. Fiction is fascinating like that.

I suppose this is exactly what happens sometimes. I obviously can’t speak on behalf of Koreans and how they perceive it, as well as I don’t fully understand how an average Western person (namely from an English-speaking country) sees them. But observing some Russian-speaking KM spaces I’ve seen people saying that they weren’t really engaged with the problems of LGBTQ+ before or even were low-key homophobic (which feels like a norm for an average person here), but after becoming familiar with KM and immersing themselves into the narrative, they started to see the bigger picture and changed their attitudes. The same works with other fandoms. Yuri on Ice dragged some people not only to the figure skating 😉 Art is really powerful. 

Speaking on the escapism fantasy. I gotta be honest, sometimes I read these very cheesy fluffy unrealistic fics exactly because they are nothing like the reality I see every day. So what? I’m gay and I need some serotonin 😀

P.S. Having the POV of a twisted morally questionable character is amazing, and it works not only in books. Love this. And it’s not like after watching Joker I started killing people (or approving it).
